Press Release

The Institute for the Development of Educational Assessment (IDEE Association) is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the international mathematics contest “Kangaroo Junior Mathematician”, dedicated to Preparatory Class and Grades I–IV.

The Kangaroo International Applied Mathematics Contest is the largest in the world, held in over 90 countries, including Romania. The problems are developed by international teams. In Romania, the Kangaroo contest is held in both Romanian and Hungarian.

The date for the Kangaroo Junior Mathematician contest for Preparatory Class and Grades I–IV is December 15, 2023.

Math can be fun and useful!
A visit to a museum, the circus, or a park can become an opportunity for children to discover that math has practical applications everywhere—and that each solution to a math problem is, in fact, a solution to a real-life challenge.

How to Participate

Teachers are invited to register as local testing center coordinators on https://stars-org.net.
These coordinators will be responsible for:

  • enrolling students,

  • organizing and supervising the contest, and

  • communicating the number of enrolled students by class via phone, email, or online form.

How will the contest be held?

The contest will take place in two formats:

1. Offline – with printed booklets, sent upon request

The coordinator may choose either to receive printed booklets for the registered students or to print the materials at the testing center.
Student registration deadline: December 4, 2023.

Students will write a password on the answer sheet (either the 4 letters from the participation code sent to the coordinator or any other four-letter combination), which they will need to memorize.
Within two working days after the contest, coordinators must send the completed answer sheets by post to:
Editura Sigma, O.P. 83, C.P. 36, Bucharest, Romania.

2. Online – via the platform www.cangurul.net

Teachers provide their 5-digit coordinator code to students, who will then register at www.editurasigma.ro. Upon registration, each participant receives a personalized code (e.g., 12345-ABCD), which is used to access the contest at www.cangurul.net.
Parents may also register students individually by following the instructions provided on editurasigma.ro.

Online access will be available from Friday, December 15, 12:00 PM to Monday, December 18, 8:00 PM.
Each participant will have 60 minutes to complete the test from the moment the problems are opened.

Where can I find the contest rules?

Please consult the official rules at: www.cangurul.ro

What prizes are awarded?

Each student will receive a participation or achievement diploma and a test analysis report. The diploma can be downloaded directly from the website using the participation code.

Teacher-coordinators will have access to student results and will also receive certificates of participation and acknowledgment of their contribution to the sustainability of a European project.
The Edu+ Offer, outlined in the official rules of the Kangaroo Junior Mathematician Contest for Preparatory Class and Grades I–IV, provides additional benefits for coordinators, including the opportunity to serve as guest editor for an issue of EduȘcoală Magazine.

How can students prepare?

Students can train for the Kangaroo Junior Mathematician contest by using the practice tests available at www.editurasigma.ro
Section KangarooPractice TestsMathematics, then select the desired grade
